Madeleine Coates (she/her) is an emerging artist living, working, and creating on Kaurna Country (Adelaide). Every moment Madeleine spends in the world around her is fieldwork for her creative practice: working across disciplines of drawing, painting, and installation, she fuses tonal realist sensibilities with diverse materials and surfaces to explore how traces of human presence are held by architectural space and the objects within it.

Madeleine completed her Bachelor of Visual Art at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2025. While studying, she has undertaken extensive exhibition and professional development opportunities, including, most recently, her participation in group show Seeing/Remembering/Painting at Gallery One. She held her first solo exhibition Something Has Happened Here at The Pod Gallery in 2024 while working from Laneway Studios; that same year, she was also awarded the Smallacombe Self-Portrait Youth Prize and was a finalist in Youthscape. Madeleine has gained further industry experience volunteering for local galleries and artist-run initiatives including FELTspace, ACE, and The Mill.
